Guyana's McDoom clan reunion draws over 200 family

A Short History and Genealogy of An Indian Indentured Labourer in Guyana:Haji McDoom and His Descendants 1884-2008.

One of the decendants, Opheera McDoom

Some 200 members of the McDoom family gathered at Heart Lake Conservation Area on 2nd August, 2008 for the annual family picnic. There were the usual games, reunions, meeting of never-before-seen relatives and a lot of talk.

But the highlight of the day was the launch of the book A Short History and Genealogy of An Indian Indentured Labourer in Guyana:Haji McDoom and His Descendants 1884-2008.

Since 1998 the McDoom family has been gathering genealogical information. A report on the 1998 picnic notes that A special event at the picnic was filling in the family tree (on paper), and a demonstration of the McDoom-Naboo family web site on the Internet. It is a practice the family has continued.

At this year's picnic family members were still adding information to the charts. At some point in time Shahabudin Mohammed McDoom began compiling a book on the family genealogy. Unfortunately, he died before he could complete the work.

While he was in hospital, he asked his son Omar to finish it, which he did. In a short speech Omar recounted all these events, paid tribute to his father, and acknowledged the help of family members.

The book tells the story of Haji McDoom and his decendants. Haji Mcdoom arrived in Guyana in 1884 on the Bann

His first wife Miriam arrived in 1885 on the Howrah.

In 1921 two of his sons bought the land that is now known as McDoom Village. Today there are about one thousand family members, most living in Canada, the U.S and the U.K.
